Dear parents,
This week we have successfully and safely reopened to Year 6 and critical worker children. I would like to say a big thank you and well done to the staff, children and parents for working hard to support this. Next week we are opening further for younger critical worker children and Year 1. When we know numbers and next week's return has been successful, we can assess our capability for further opening under the Department for Education's (DFE) guidance.

'Bubble 1' (Bubblebusters):
Our older children have returned well and in good spirits. They have completed some great work this week: news reporting on positive stories, considering mental health, solving challenging (and infuriating) maths puzzles and learning to safely socialise. They have named their bubble "Bubblebusters".
Attendance:
If you choose to send your child back to school (if they are eligible) and there is a day that they don't attend, whether they are poorly or do not need to access to provision, please ring or email so we can make sure with use the correct codes for authorising their absence on our, and the DFE, registers. If you choose for your child not to attend, you Will Not be penalised.
Home learning:
Please do keep sending us any work or other activities you get up to whilst you are unable to attend school as we would love to see it. We will try soon to have shared school and home projects so the children can virtually collaborate on some tasks. We may also be able to have, for KS2, school and home 'Kahoot' quizzes: I will let you know soon how these may work.
Guidance on home learning can be found here:

Looking out for your wellbeing and safety:
At this time it's as important as ever to ensure safety of children and families. A link to "Whisper" is still embedded to the top of the head's blog and if you have any concerns, you can click the link to anonymously inform us. If the safety concerns are serious you can contact MARU directly: Tel. 0300 1231 116 or email: multiagencyreferralunit@cornwall.gov.uk
I hope you all have had a nice 1/2 term (I know it perhaps doesn't really feel like a 1/2 term) and I look forward to seeing some of you on Tuesday 2nd June and hope to see as many of you as safely as can be before the end of July.
Take care and best wishes,
Matt Avery
(Head of school)
Dear parents,
Apologies for the long delay in the latest head's blog. It has been a busy week as changes and guidance happen for the phased reopening of schools and I was keen to give you as much information as possible. I am pleased to inform you that Blisland will begin a phased reopening from Tuesday 2nd June (Monday 1st June will give us time as a staff to test run safety procedures) - starting with Year 6 and vulnerable and critical worker children. We will then begin to plan wider opening to Year 1 from Monday 8th June after evaluating our 1st week back.
As we roll out these phased openings we will assess our capability to run safely on a day-to-day basis and will keep you all updated. Please do listen out for government updates as we hear these at the same time as you and bare with us whilst we try our upmost to follow DFE guidance for safely opening more widely. We and the trust will update you as often as we can.

As these times are completely unprecedented and some things can move at a fast pace, I have attached a link to the king's college Covid-19 tracking app (Separate to the soon to be released NHS test, track and trace app). It can give advice on supporting returning to school as well as providing a link to a symptom tracker app. This may help with a local and nation response to check flare-ups of the virus and the increase of the much talked about R value as we gain more freedom of movement and with school staff and children returning to work: https://covid.joinzoe.com/post/children-school-covid
Home Learning:
Thank you for the work that you have sent through, there have been some excellent pieces over the past week: As school begins to reopen and staff are working on site, it will be more challenging to set detailed work as regularly. We will set tasks to complete during this time and will sign-post you to useful resources. If there is anything in particular work wise you feel you may need for your child, please email their class teacher and we will do our best to support you. Phone calls:
When school reopens from 2nd June, Mrs Harrison and Mrs Pearce will make phone calls home to you. However, if you would like a phone call or a video phone call, we could, from school with a couple members of staff organise a video phone call through an app called: "Microsoft Teams" If this is of interest to you please email: secretary@blislandprimary.co.uk and Mrs Hawker will help us organise this.

Home learning:
Thank you to all who have sent different aspects of their home learning in to us. We do like hearing from you and knowing that you are all safe and well. Please remember to take part in any aspects of learning you have the time and means to do. This week for KS2 we will set some interesting challenges for showing and completing your work.
Phone Calls:
It has been great for our staff to speak to most of you last week. If you have n't had your phone call yet (I know I have 3 still to make), don't worry you have not been forgotten, your teachers have been quite busy and will call you this week.
Schools' Phased Reopening - 1st June:
We are sure that like us, you have lots of questions following the Prime Minister's announcement last night.
At the moment, for us in school, there is no change to the guidance, so we will be continuing to operate as we have over the last few weeks. We will continue to provide essential child care for key worker families as well as vulnerable children (this is happening through hubs - our hub is Wadebridge Primary Academy).
The message remains that it is safer to stay at home.
We appreciate this is a confusing time. If you require information about access to child care through our hubs, please email. I completely understand that some of you may be feeling anxious about these phased change but rest assured we will always make the right decisions for the children's and your wellbeing - the reopening of schools are still subject to review. Once we have assessed the new information and reviewed the guidance on how to manage a safe, phased return we will of course keep you informed.
Below is detail for parents with questions and answers - this information is subject to change:

As we reach the end of the 2nd lockdown period, I would like to say well done to our families for working hard during these difficult times. I truly hope that the optimistic messages that we are moving to a new phase in all this so that we can better support the children and yourselves at this time.
Online Safety:
During this time, unfortunately not everyone sees the common goal, the common good and perhaps sees inappropriate opportunity. With the current situation see us having to be online more often please beware of the need to check content that children may be accessing. As mentioned earlier in the year, games such as Roblox are open to many people and there have been reports of adults trying to communicate with children.
Further more, sadly through Zoom this week local under 8 football team online coaching sessions were hacked and they were exposed to inappropriate content. Do be mindful of this when attuning video group chats.
Please see the link from the NSPCC for keeping safe online:
https://www.nspcc.org.uk/keeping-children-safe/online-safety/
Phone Calls:
The week beginning the 4th May staff from Blisland will call around to speak to yourselves to see how you and the children are and if we can help further in any way. The calls will come from a withheld number.
Home Learning:
Many thanks for all the different work that has been sent to us. I have seen siblings collaborating on stories, children working on phonics, studying countries, writing poems and cooking. it' great to see and hear about the work you are doing and how you are keeping yourselves busy. Please remember at this time do as much or as little as you can. Also do check the daily and one-of lessons on the BBC Bitesize home learning pages:
https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/dailylessons
Thanks to Bex Ivins have now a really nice 'Time Capsule' PDF which I was trying to find to share with you that children might like to compete. Please see the attached pdf at the end of this blog
Take care and I hope you are able in some form enjoy and celebrate this Fridays bank holiday VE Day 75th anniversary.
Best wishes,
Matt Avery

Dear parents,
We are now heading towards the end of the first week of our second 3-week 'Lockdown'; I hope that you have been able to enjoy the weather in your home spaces and have kept safe, well and busy.
Home Learning:
Many thanks for sharing examples of learning and activities which you have been doing this week. It is great to see both work completed which your teachers have set you and the additional activities which you are doing at home.
Please remember that the work set is not compulsory so please do as much as or as little as you are able to.
BBC earlier this week made their learning activities live with some very good daily lessons linked to different subjects. Children can access these lessons by subject and/or age group and I encourage you to look at these alongside any other learning you choose to do - set by teachers or activities you and parents have chosen.

Have a lovely and safe weekend,
Matt Avery
Happy weekend everyone, I hope that you are all well and are prepared for the extension to lockdown.
Home-learning:
Work will still be uploaded to class pages regularly; we will aim to cover topics and learning that the children would have been studying this term as well as giving them chance to practise skills they have already worked on. But as always, do what you can - spending time as a family, looking after each other and more fun activities such as baking and DIY is perhaps needed more than some other aspects of learning. If you do any home-learning (linked to work set or other tasks you work on), please do send it to your teachers - we miss teaching you all and would love to see your work. This week we have had some work sent in by Amy, Byron and Megan.

Critical workers and vulnerable children:
If your circumstances in anyway as a key worker or the vulnerability of your child changes and feel that you may need reduced school provision for your child/children, please email me so that I may support you. Presently, Wadebridge is our hub school and I can go there to support our children who may need the hub's services.
Online safety
Whilst there are huge benefits to being online in order to stay connected to family and friends during this period, we recognise many parents may feel concerned about the activities and content their children could be accessing. This guidance outlines resources to help keep children safe from different risks online and where to go to receive support and advice:

Keeping in touch:
Teachers are still working (mostly remotely) and are contactable should you wish to share work, ask a question about home-learning or to request support. over the next week we will aim to call you all to check how you and the children are: we would love to chat with the children so that they know we are still very much thinking of them. The call will come from a withheld number.

Dear parents and children,
What a strange Easter it has been! Beautiful weather that we can not make the most of but I hope you have been able to enjoy it from gardens or perhaps on your occasional walks or periods of exercise: long may this beautiful weather last.
Summer Term learning:
Firstly, please remember that when it comes to ‘home-learning’ we would like you to do as little or as much of this as you can - there is absolutely no pressure. We know that many of you will be working at home yourselves, trying to teach multiple children, having challenges with internet speeds or perhaps looking after younger children, who (I know from experience) are time stealers, so please do not worry if things don't quite go to plan and do not hesitate to get in touch for any kind of support. Also remember that although school provides a great education, home-learning and experiences have huge merit too - bug hunting, cooking or a bit of DIY is authentic learning and hugely valuable.
From the 20th April the BBC are also unveiling educational materials for weekly input which we/you may tap into.
Work will be put on to class pages and if possible emailed to you via arbor.
English Home Learning:
Each week, teachers will be uploading a weekly English focus to your child’s class page. This will have a theme, some resources if relevant and if possible perhaps a video tutorial. Please note that you do not have to print worksheets off. Your child can simply write their answers onto a piece of paper, notebook or email directly to us. Teachers have already sent home in packs: spellings and some reading comprehensions which can supplement the weekly themes. Please also do check your child’s class page for a range of other exciting websites that have been collated for you to use. These range from teaching videos to websites that allow you to access e-books for free.
Maths Home Learning:
In school, teachers regularly use ‘White Rose’ Maths resources. These resources are used across many schools in the UK. In response to the current situation, they have produced simple and easy to follow daily resources for parents to use for home learning. Please use this link, choose your child’s year group and take part with the daily teaching videos and activities. https://whiterosemaths.com/homelearning/
Wider curriculum
There will be all sorts of options for the wider curriculum – these may be (in no particular order) Science, Art, Design and Technology, IT, Music, Geography, History, RE, Sport/PE or French based. These will all be optional to do as topic-based ideas linked to a class enquiry question. As we have said before – please don’t worry. Anything that you can do is will go a long way to helping the children
New roof:
After Easter, school remains closed - Wadebridge is our hub school for key worker and vulnerable children - please email me to let me know if your child requires a place. While school is closed, work by 3MS will commence on installing our new school roof. The roofers will be practicing social-distancing during this work.
Key Worker and vulnerable children
If for any reason your circumstances change in regards to being able to work from home, if advice changes and your child may need to return to schooling or if you have concerns related to your child then please do contact us.
Finally, we do really miss the children! Planning lessons for your wonderful children who we aren't fortunate enough to see at present isn't as enjoyable as teaching in the classroom, seeing their smiling faces and eyes lighting up to experiences they have enjoyed and learning they have grasp - so, please do send any pictures of ‘home learning’ to:
head@blislandprimary.co.uk
aharrison@blislandprimary.co.uk
cpowdrill@blislandprimary.co.uk
secretary@blislandprimary.co.uk
We would love to hear from you!
After Easter, ‘home learning’ needn’t start until Tuesday 14th April – so please, as much as you can, enjoy the Bank Holiday!
Stay safe and best wishes as always,
Matt Avery (Head of School)
Dear parents/carers,
Well, we have got to beginning of a very strange Easter Holiday. I hope that you are all well and the children are adjusting to these strange circumstances - I am sure they are as I know your children are extremely positive and resilient; they are a real credit to you.
Home Learning:
During this time where work and useful learning links will be available from class pages, please do not put pressure on yourself to get all work done. The work and timetables of work are a guide and the tasks set are for children to practise skills and learning already completed and they should have knowledge to complete them. Any work, pictures or videos of work can be sent to class teachers - we will respond as often as possible and virtual certificates (worth house points) can be sent out to you and you will get a mention in the head's blog. I am also sure many of you are working in different ways too: baking, cleaning and DIY to name a few - these can be sent to teachers as well.
Nursery/Reception/KS1: aharrison@blislandprimary.co.uk and/or cpowdrill@blislandprimary.co.uk
KS2 and general help/enquiries: head@blislandprimary.co.uk
Key-workers and Vulnerable Children:
Currently Blisland is closed over the Easter Holiday. However, our academy trust is open and running hub schools for children of critical workers and those children who may be vulnerable. If you need to access these hubs as you qualify as a critical-worker or your child is vulnerable please email me so that I can make arrangements for you with the hubs. Our hub is Wadebridge Primary Academy.
If your situation changes please get in touch via email asap.
Have a lovely Easter, stay as busy as you can and let's keep our fingers crossed for a swift recovery to normality.
Best wishes,
Matt Avery (Head of School)
Dear parents and guardians,
I sincerely hope that you are able to take a deep breath this weekend and from somewhere with your children find a laugh and smile. We are of course shut from today to all pupils (except for those who have been identified as key workers or those further advised to attend school based on government criteria).
Please can I send my heartfelt gratitude to you all for the care and support you have given to your children during this difficult time, and for the support you have shown to us all at Blisland School. All of our staff truly care about the education and well-being of your children and all children in education - many of us will be working through this period, over Easter and beyond.
There has been work sent home many pieces of work and links set on class blogs. Please look here for work: we hope to update these pages as often as needed.
If you need support, advice or you or the children would just like to stay in touch, please feel free to email my directly. My email has been included in communication emails sent to you.
Do stay safe, follow government advice which is to avoid social contact and keep distances. And of course, treat everyday like your birthday and wash your hands regularly for at least 20-seconds.
Lots of love to you all,
Matt Avery (Head of School)
