Storytellers had great fun searching for Easter treats and then happily sharing them in class so everyone had the same amount. Watching them help each other find the eggs and happily share is a pure joy and an essential aspect of their early education, which they are all flourishing in.
Happy Easter from everyone at Storytellers.

Blisland Primary Academy   Easter celebrations

During the last week of the Spring term, Storytellers read “Poppy and Sam’s Easter Egg Hunt” by Sam Taplin. The story explored the fun themes of hidden Easter egg shapes and encountering various springtime animals. Storytellers then began to explore the real meaning of celebrating Easter, learning that Easter Sunday is not just the day we all enjoy chocolate eggs but is traditionally part of the Easter Story. The children visited Blisland Church to place the Easter garden they had made; they were greeted by The Revd Robin Thwaites, who kindly took the time to speak with the children, starting by explaining when Jesus died, his body was put in a tomb, and a big stone was placed over the entrance so nobody could get in. Two days later, Jesus's friend Mary went to the tomb and discovered that the stone had been rolled away and Jesus's body was gone. At first, Mary was sad, who had taken her friend? But then she heard a voice, she turned around and saw Jesus, he was alive! Mary ran off to tell Jesus's friends he'd come back to life. The children grappled with the child-friendly version of the story and explored the various traditions surrounding Holy Week.

We couldn’t have been prouder of them as they listened intently and were keen to ask questions and contribute to the conversation.

Within our EYFS curriculum, the children learn about special times for family and friends and special times of year for other people.  Therefore, throughout the year in Storytellers, we learn how people of different faiths celebrate their special festivals.

Welcome Back Everyone!

We hope you all had a well deserved break and hopefully didn't eat too much chocolate!

We have a busy term ahead - see our attached rainbow sheet for some of the things we shall be learning over the coming months.  In a couple of weeks we have our trip to Porfell Wildlife Park which we are all looking forward to.

We have just started to find out all about Farms (our topic for the term) in our geography lesson this week.  We have also started to learn how to play the drums, though we haven't started using actual drums this week.  In Science we were observing fruits and vegetables and we carefully drew the outsides and insides - we even had a taste of the pomegranate - it was delicious!!!

RNLI Visit Friday 19th April

The volunteers shared their four fundamental water safety messages, which are:
-Stop & Think

- Stay Together

- Float

- Call 999 or 112

We learnt how to spot a wide range of dangers, plan for a day out and identify an emergency situation – as well as understanding the effect cold water has on your body.

Alternative Sports Day

The children in Lantic class loved learning about the skills involved with Archery, Dartmoor 3 Ball game and an Island Attack game...  and the sun was glorious!!

Microbits and Coding

This week, we have started to learn how to use coding to control our resident set of BBC Microbits. These are small programmable devices that can be made to show light sequences, sounds and responses to inputs.

We used block code to provide a set of instructions for the Microbits to follow. Next week, we will be looking at developing our understanding of Microbits to develop our own projects.

Welcome back to Summer 1, this term our enquiry question leads on from our previous work on Brazil. We will be finding out 'What the relationship is between the Rainforest and Climate Change'.

It has been great to welcome the children back and hear what they've been up to in the holidays.

We have a really exciting summer term planned, keep up to date with the events on our class page and under the events tab for diary dates.

Attached below is the homework grid, enquiry grid and spellings.

The start of the Summer Term

It has been lovely to welcome the children back and hear what they've been up to in the holidays. It sounds like they have all had a lovely time off.

We have a really exciting summer term planned with lots to look forward to.

We have started our science topic this week which is 'our bodies.' We have been learning about our eyes and how they help us to see. We did an investigation where we turned off and on the lights and saw what happened to our pupils. We then also acted as scientists and collected data. We made a tally chart of the eye colours in the class and discussed which was the most common. We loved collecting data and sharing our findings as a class!

Our big question for this term is 'where do we live?' and I am looking forward to our Geography lessons where we will explore this question further.

Just a reminder that our P.E days have stayed the same this half term and so children can wear their P.E kits in on a Monday and a Friday.

The children have come back to school brilliantly and as always, I am always so impressed with their attitude to learning and look forward to our term together.

The year 1 team.

Introducing the KIRFs Café...

What are KIRFs?

KIRFs (Key Instant Recall Facts) are pieces of mathematical knowledge that we want the children to learn off-by-heart or be able to work out very quickly (within 3 seconds).

They are designed to support the development of the mental skills that underpin mathematics. They are particularly useful when calculating, be it adding, subtracting, multiplying or dividing.  They will include facts such as number bonds, counting on, back, times tables, equivalence of units of measure, and square numbers.

Each year group is allocated key facts to focus on throughout the year, in line with age related expectations. These should be practised for rapid recall.

Check out the website and class blogs for the newest KIRFs each Half Term.

We look forward to welcoming you to the KIRFs Cafe on Wednesday 17
th April at 3.10pm in Finnygook.

Welcome Back!

Welcome back to this final term of the year.
Some things to be mindful of in the coming weeks.

PE - This is now on Thursdays with the coach. Children to come into school in school PE kit.

This Thursday (18th April). We look forward to welcoming you into school for 2 reasons. Firstly, Year 3,4 and 5 have prepared a celebration of their work all about Ancient Egyptians and would love to welcome you into the school hall at 2.30, later into their classrooms. Secondly, Thursday after school in the hall sees the residential meeting for Year 4 parents. Parents to please make their way straight after school. The meeting will begin at 3.30pm.

Please do check your emails for information for the next couple of weeks. There's lots going on for children and families. We warmly welcome you into school.  If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to get in touch.

Clubs will be starting back in the second week, please do email the class teacher to try to guarantee a spot on your favourites!

Finally.  Please can you continue to support your children with their times tables.  If you would like another timetable sheet, please do get in touch.  A helpful website is www.timestables.co.uk and the ones I showed you at our Parent Teacher Meeting.

Many Thanks

Miss Pittas and Mrs Langan

March 2024

This month we have been studying the Vikings. Our history question was; ‘Who were the Vikings and what impact did they have on Britain?’ The children asked and answered questions about the past and evaluated the reliability of their evidence to discover more about this period in history. They uncovered where the Viking period came in our history timeline and then who the Vikings were, where their homelands where and where and why they came and settled here. They then looked at the impact the Vikings had on Britain by studying how Britain was before the Vikings came to settle, how it was during their raids and this era and then after the Viking era ended.

In Literacy this month we have been studying the story ‘Arthur and the Golden Rope’. We read the story as a class over the course of the month whilst completing VIPER activities and using our Fab Four characters to investigate the story in more detail. The children completed lots of SPaG work, particularly focusing on expanded noun phrases, direct speech and fronted adverbials before eventually planning, writing and editing their very own short story as an unlikely hero.

In Maths we completed lots of work on fractions. The children also spent lots of time working on their multiplications. We have been using Times Table Rockstars to help increase our recall of times table facts.

In Science this month we celebrated science week by completing several extra science investigations in addition to our electricity unit. The children spent lots of time investigating circuits in their unit of learning and looking at renewable and non-renewable sources and electrical safety. Our extra investigations involved the children researching farming of the future and then used the Tinkercad software to design their own farm of the future. They also used Scratch Jnr. to explore time travel. After researching what time travel could be the children demonstrated how it might look using the Scratch Jnr. app.
