Our first full week of this academic year has been wonderful with lots of learning, smiles and positive attitudes. Children have settled into their new classes fantastically and have been supporting new children wonderfully. As we start the new year, could we please remind you to keep us updated with any changes to address or contact details. It is important that we are able to contact someone about the children at any point of the day in case of emergency. You are able to do this yourself by logging into Arbor or, through the office. There are a few interesting and exciting things coming up over the next few weeks. The calendar on the website is up to date with current events so please make sure you check in regularly. Clubs start next week and they are proving popular as always. Please make sure that you let Mrs Norris know if your child would like to take part. Photos are next week on Monday. As it is PE for all children, we are asking that they come in uniform and then change for the afternoon session. I have been asked to bring your attention to Pam Adam's piano lessons. This year she has space for her in-school lessons. If your children are interested, please let the office know. We also have been sent information from the Marine Biological Association (who worked with the Lego team last year) that their Rock Pool festival is being held next weekend at Porthpean. There are leaflets in the noticeboard and outside the office if you are interested.

w/e 12.9.25

What a crazily busy first week back we've had! Including last week, we've done so much already.

In English, we've started our unit of work based on the really fun book, 'The Beasties'. We have used our word classes to write exciting sentences about the characters!

In Maths, we're all starting the year off with our learning about place value - such a useful skill. We've used some manipulatives to help.

In Science, we thought about what we already know about materials and how they can be changed. In computing, we learned about search engines. In RE, we are learning about how the Golden Rule is something that all faiths follow, including Humanism. In PSHE, we learned how to create a class charter.

In Art, we've started a process towards creating a self-portrait using carbon paper, tracing paper and poetry! It was really exciting!

Plus, in Music, the year 4 children (and Miss Henning!!) have started learning how to play the violin with Sally! What fun!

Terrific Tregantle!

What a fantastic first week it has been in Tregantle Class!

Our new school starters have settled in beautifully and have loved getting to know their new classroom. The children have had so much fun exploring all of the different areas, from painting and construction to role play and the ever-popular mud kitchen.

One of the highlights of the week has been meeting their very own reading buddy. The children really enjoyed sharing stories together, and it was wonderful to see how engaged and excited they were during story time.

We are so proud of how well everyone has started their school journey. It has been a week full of smiles, laughter, and learning, and we can't wait to see what adventures next week will bring!

This week we have been discussing "all about me".
The children have been identifying different features of their faces including nose, mouth, ears, eyes and hair. They have used paint to make self portraits and have enjoyed using the whiteboards to draw on, creating pictures of themselves and their families.
We have made colourful framed handprint pictures and the children have been using different materials on the tuft tray to create different hair styles.

At story time we have read the story of "The three little pigs" and have been reading stories about how we are all different such as "What Wesley wore".
In phonics we have identified objects with the same initial sounds in a game of "Silly socks",  we have been on a listening walk in the play ground to see what we could hear and have used our bodies to make sounds that make us happy.

In maths we have been finding numbers in our environment and sorting and grouping objects to see how many.

Have a lovely weekend

Julie and Sarah

Harrowbarrow Primary Academy   Welcome Back

During my morning 'meet and greet', I think I have managed to see most parents and carers since the start of the new academic year. If not, welcome back and I look forward to catching up with you next week. A special welcome to our new children and their families; we hope you have been made to feel welcome and the children have enjoyed the start to their primary education. Within days of our new reception children starting, I began to give tours of the school for prospective new families for September 2026. If you know of anyone looking for a school place for next September, please feel free to share my contact information so they can book a school viewing if interested: head@harrowbarrowprimary.co.uk

We start all new school years with a period of settling the children back into routines and setting expectations. After a six week break, I am always surprised at how quickly the children settle into the rhythm of school life. This year has seen an especially good start across the school, with smiley, happy children bounding into class, enthusiastic to learn at the start of the day. We look forward to celebrating the children's successes and achievements at our weekly celebration assemblies on Fridays. Please look out for praise certificates and ask your child to explain why they were awarded them.

We welcomed new teaching assistant and lunchtime supervisor Sarah Marley to our team last week. Whilst there are no other new members of staff, some staff are working in different roles. A reminder of the staff organisation for this year:

Class 1: Teachers - Tom Ottewell-Taylor, Abi Flashman & Jo Walker (Wednesday afternoons). Teaching Assistants - Angela Bushell, Stacy Vinson, Sarah Marley
Class 2: Teachers - Ati Charlesworth & Jo Walker (Tuesday afternoons). Teaching Assistant - Lesley Connell
Class 3: Teachers - Sam Watts & Andrew Hunt (Thursday afternoons). Teaching Assistants - Jo Cocking, Sarah Marley, Jo Walker, Brendan Thomas
Class 4: Teachers - Melissa Pinfield & Andrew Hunt (Monday & Tuesday afternoons). Teaching Assistants - Heather Thomson, Brendan Thomas

Lesley Connell is no longer working in the school office but remains as Breakfast Club and After School Club lead. For all office queries/communication, please now direct emails to Elaine Moyle: emoyle@harrowbarrowprimary.co.uk

Elaine does not work in the office on Fridays, so if your query or communication can wait until another day, please avoid calling into the office. I will be covering the office on Fridays but am also often involved in meetings or cover teaching.

In my role, I am fortunate enough to work with all the classes. This week, I particularly enjoyed teaching an art lesson to Class 3. The theme for their work this half term is 'drawing stories', with the aim of illustrating a piece of text at the end of the unit. The children started by looking at a tableaux and imagined it as a scene from a story. Here are some examples of their charcoal and chalk sketches:

We have lots of exciting learning opportunities planned for the term ahead and look forward to sharing these with you in the weeks to come. One of our new developments this year is the work we plan to do through our climate action plan. A copy of this can be found in the information tab on this website: www.harrowbarrowprimary.co.uk/Information/Climate_Action_Plan
If you feel you might be able to contribute to our work in this area, please contact us as we want to involve our whole school community.
I look forward to sharing more of the children's learning achievements in the coming weeks.

What a great start to the Autumn Term Year 3/4a!

We've started on our Learning Adventure to Ancient Egypt, looking at artefacts and their discoveries, the importance of the River Nile and how our lives are very different to those in ancient Egypt. We've discussed key vocabulary and the difference between primary and secondary evidence.

We've had great fun retelling the traditional tale of Red Riding Hood using a 'Story Piano', discussing key events, characters and setting and how traditional tales can be exaggerated over time to make them more exciting to the listener.

We've revised our knowledge of Place Value, discussing the importance of a place value holder (0) in reading and writing numbers. We're currently thinking carefully about the value of digits and using manipulatives to support our learning. We've also been busy practising our KIRFS.

Today we were visited in KS2 by Carly who works with the Cognition and Learning Team for Cornwall. She led us through the workings of our unique and specialised brains - with the children's help of course. Carly has left us with a challenge and a promise of rewards which sparked our interest. We will be exploring this further next week and I am looking forward to seeing what the children can come up with! Watch this space!

Welcome Back

It's the start of a new school year.

The children have made a great start. In geography this half term we are learning about the coast, so we headed to beach and used the coast path to visit Porthpean, Duporth and Charlestown to compare their features and look for signs of erosion.

In maths we are focusing on place value, writing we are writing postcards from prison and in science we are starting our work on evolution and inheritance.

We are looking forward to sharing our learning through the year!

Welcome Back to a New School Year!

We are delighted to welcome everyone back to Blisland Primary for the start of the new academic year. September always brings with it a sense of excitement and new beginnings, and this year is no different. The school has been buzzing with energy as pupils have returned with big smiles, ready to learn, and eager to reconnect with friends after the summer holidays. We are also thrilled to welcome our new families to the Blisland community, and we look forward to sharing many memorable experiences together this year.

Welcoming Our Nursery New Starters

A special mention must go to our new nursery starters, who have settled in wonderfully during their very first days at Blisland. Starting school is such an important milestone, and we are so pleased with how confident and curious the children have already shown themselves to be. Our staff are excited to guide them on their learning journey and watch them grow over the months ahead. The nursery classroom is already a hive of activity, full of play, exploration, and plenty of laughter.

 P.E. on Tuesday Afternoons

A reminder for families that our school P.E. lessons will take place on Tuesday afternoons this term. Pupils should come to school dressed in their P.E. kit on Tuesdays so that we can make the most of the afternoon without needing to change in class. The kit consists of a plain white T-shirt, black shorts or trousers, and the school jumper. This helps to create a sense of unity and ensures children are comfortable and ready to take part in all physical activities.

Surf Club at Polzeath

We are delighted that our popular after-school Surf Club is back again this term. Every Monday after school, pupils have the chance to head to Polzeath beach for surfing sessions with the brilliant team at Surfs Up Surf School. This club provides children with the opportunity to learn new skills, build water confidence, and enjoy the natural beauty of our local coastline. If transport to Polzeath is an issue, please do not hesitate to contact the school secretary, who will be happy to help make arrangements so that as many pupils as possible can take part.

Playtimes with New Equipment

Playtimes at Blisland have become even more exciting! We have introduced new equipment for pupils to enjoy, including diabolos and juggling balls. These have already proved very popular and are helping children to develop coordination, perseverance, and creativity while having fun outdoors. It has been wonderful to see pupils encouraging one another and showing resilience as they learn new tricks and skills. Playtimes remain such a vital part of the school day, and these new resources are helping to keep them active, imaginative, and inclusive.

KS2 Curriculum

Children Through History In Key Stage 2 this term, our curriculum theme is "Children Through History." Pupils will be exploring what life was like for children in different times and places, comparing their experiences with those of today. This fascinating topic allows our pupils to develop historical enquiry skills, empathy, and a deeper understanding of how society has changed over time. Lessons will include rich discussions, source work, and creative tasks to bring history to life.

 KS1 Curriculum

Geography and Aliens! Meanwhile, in Key Stage 1 the focus is on Geography under the topic of "Place." Pupils are beginning to explore where they live, how places are connected, and why our environment matters. To add to the excitement, the class has already received correspondence from alien who are curious about life on Earth and in particular Blisland! This imaginative twist has really captured the children's attention and is sparking some fantastic questions, creativity, and learning across subjects.

Looking Ahead

The first week back has been full of energy, new opportunities, and plenty of smiles. With exciting topics, clubs, and activities ahead, we are confident that this year will be full of discovery, creativity, and joy for all pupils. Thank you, as always, to our families for your continued support. Here's to a fantastic year together at Blisland Primary! -

Welcome back

I hope you have had a lovely, relaxing summer with lots of opportunities to enjoy our beautiful corner of Cornwall.

Scarecrow Competition
You may have noticed the Number 1 notice on the gate over the summer - we are delighted to have won the village competition again this year! As this was a joint school and community effort this makes it even better and we thank you all for collecting and contributing your recycling, a special thank you to Sophie and Elfwynn for taking time to help build the structure and Mrs Andrew for sourcing, cleaning and bringing the recycled fishing nets and crab pot to school - a smelly affair! We will use this as a launch pad for several sustainability projects over the coming year to involve and inspire the children, raise awareness and work towards making our school environment more climate friendly and sustainable.

Start and End times
We will continue with ALL children entering the school via the top gates which will be opened at 8:40am and the bell will ring at 8:45am for the start of the day. Adults will escort the children to their classrooms, ready for the start of the day. At the end of the day at 3:15pm, all children will leave via the top gate. Children must be collected by a known adult or by making alternative arrangements with the school office. Children in Year 5 and Year 6 can walk home by themselves with parental permission. Please make sure your child is on time in the mornings to support them by having the best possible start to the day. This means they enter the class alongside their friends, have time to chat and a chance to speak to adults about any worries or concerns before the start of the learning day.

Equipment and PE
As we seem to have entered a damp weather period, please could you make sure your child has a raincoat so they can join in with any outdoor play times. They also need a bottle filled with water, a healthy snack for break time and packed lunch if they prefer this rather than a school meal.

Canute class will have outdoor learning on Mondays and PE on Thursday afternoon. Tregeagle Class will have PE on Monday and Thursday afternoons. On the days where your child has PE, please can they attend school in their PE kit, black/blue shorts, white t-shirt and trainers. On chillier days, the children can wear their school jumpers and joggers. This will help save time getting changed and eliminate the search for spare kit so we can make the most of the active time. If you have any questions, please contact your child's teacher.

Attendance
As parents, we all want our children to thrive in school-academically, socially, and emotionally. One of the most important factors in helping them succeed is regular school attendance. Attendance matters because:

• Learning builds day by day. Each lesson connects to the next. Missing even a day or two can make it harder for your child to keep up.
• Good habits start early. Showing up on time and being present teaches responsibility and builds routines that last well beyond school.
• Stronger social connections. When children attend consistently, they form deeper friendships and feel a stronger sense of belonging in their classroom community.
• Higher achievement. Studies consistently show that students with regular attendance perform better in reading, math, and other subjects.

How You Can Support Good Attendance:

• Set routines at home. Regular bedtimes, morning checklists, and preparing school items the night before makes mornings less stressful.
• Communicate with the school. If your child is struggling with health, anxiety, or another challenge that affects attendance, speak to us.
• Celebrate effort. Acknowledge your child's commitment to showing up-even small encouragement goes a long way.

Consistent attendance sends children a clear message: education is a priority. By helping them build the habit of showing up every day, we are giving them the tools they need not only to succeed in school but also to develop the discipline and resilience that will serve them for a lifetime.
